Prof. Paul Kuruk is the Deputy Chairman of the Ghana International Trade Commission (GITC). He holds a bachelor's degree (LL.B) from the University of Ghana, Legon; a master's degree (LL.M) from Temple University, Pennsylvania; and a doctorate degree (J.S.D) from Stanford University, California. He was a Visiting Scholar at Oxford University (St. Peter's College), United Kingdom, and a Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Patent, Copyright and Competition Law, Munich, Germany.
He is the Lucille Stewart Beeson Professor of Law of Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, serves as a Delegate to the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), New York, and is the Facilitator of negotiations at the Intergovernmental Committee (IGC) of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Geneva, aimed at developing an international instrument for the protection of traditional knowledge. He is also the Executive Director of the Institute for African Development, an NGO based in Accra.
Prof. Kuruk has taught, conducted research, published and advised international and regional agencies on trade issues including investment, competition, trade facilitation, subsidies, trade remedies, dispute resolution, intellectual property, traditional knowledge and regional integration. He was also in private practice with Los Angeles-based law firms where he worked on international trade and investment matters.
He served as a negotiator for the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) during the negotiations of the West Africa-European Union Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA); chair of the technical committee on the ECOWAS Investment Policy and Code; and consultant for Ghana regarding the national implications of the EPA. He is a recipient of the prestigious Fulbright Senior Scholar Award offered by the State Department of the United States of America.
